Ondertussen heb ik het uitgelezen en volgt er vandaag een review over. Ik had bij het kopen van dit boek helemaal geen idee wat me te wachten stond. Reiko houdt van de eindeloze en mooi gekleurde lucht van de Californische woestijn. <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"nl\"><span class=\"\">Het is een toevlucht voor een steeds claustrofobischer leven met druk van de familie en haar eigen geheimen.<\/span> <\/span>In deze woestijn die haar zo vertrouwd is ontmoet zij Seth; <span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"nl\"><span class=\"\"> een jongen die de liefde voor de woestijn deelt en haar doet verlangen naar een ander soort leven. Reiko en Seth willen beiden echter iets dat de ander hen niet kan geven. Als de zomer ten einde loopt, brokkelt dat wat zij samen hadden en deelden stukje bij beetje af. Het verhaal van Reiko en Seth maakte me erg nieuwsgierig. YA boeken staan meestal wel bekend om hun zoetsappige verhalen en hun ietwat \u2018platte\u2019 plot maar ik moet toegeven; dit boek is me zo erg meegevallen..ik ben er uiteindelijk denk ik zelfs van gaan houden. <i>Ik ben ook wel een sucker voor mooie liefdesverhalen, dat moet ik eerlijk toegeven<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Ondanks dat ik verwachtte dat het een typisch liefdesverhaal zou zijn, werd ik al snel blij verrast met de verschillende wendingen in het verhaal. Aan de start van het boek kom je erachter dat Reiko enorm zit met het verdriet dat ze heeft om de dood van haar grotere zus. Terwijl iedereen probeert door te gaan kan Reiko het niet loslaten en gebruikt de geest van haar zus nog steeds als uitlaatklep voor veel wat er in haar leven gebeurd. Ze is vastbesloten om goede cijfers te blijven halen om zo op deze manier haar zus en ouders niet teleur te stellen \u2013 zij moet het nu gaan doen. Bijna elke nacht glipt ze wel naar buiten om alleen in de woestijn te zijn. Alleen met haar gedachten; hier kan ze goed nadenken en haar <i>real life<\/i> even loslaten.<\/p>\n<p>Het is een verhaal over liefde. Over rouw. Over familie en over jezelf vinden maar belangrijkste misschien wel; van jezelf gaan houden. Reiko leert gedurende het boek zoveel over haarzelf dat ze uiteindelijk ook het ergste wat haar is overkomen, de dood van haar zus, een plekje kan geven. De dieperliggende thema\u2019s en de manier waarop Katherine Webber die verpakt heeft in dit boek en in het dialoog tussen Reiko en Seth hebben me verbaasd.
